I come from a family of coffee lovers. My grandmother had this morning ritual where she’d wake up at 5am, brew the first pot of coffee and bring everyone in bed a small cup of black sweetened coffee. She’d brew a second pot for breakfast, once everyone was showered and ready to start the day.
It was only natural that as an adult I’d create my own little morning ritual around coffee. I’d make a big deal out of it and couldn’t imagine starting my day without it.
When I started to have gut issues, I was told by the doctor that I should consider quitting coffee but I convinced myself that one cup a day was ok, as long as I kept myself hydrated. But the burning sensation in my chest due to my GERD (acid reflux) persisted and, not wanting to rely on medication, I decided that it was time to quit coffee.
I had tried matcha it in the past but wasn’t completely sold on the idea, so I started to experiment with different brands and realized that, like coffee, the better the quality, the better the brew.
Drinking matcha has improved my overall feeling in the morning and I no longer have the burning sensation in my chest or the anxiety I was left after drinking coffee. I prepare my matcha with almond milk or any plant based milk I have in my fridge. I mostly take it hot but in the summer I do appreciate a nice cold matcha latte. It is not only packed with antioxidants but it is, for me, like a treat!
